Summary: Biofertilizers act through beneficial soil microorganisms, establishing a mutualistic relationship with plants. They can function as promoters of plant growth, producers of phytohormones, act as biocontrol agents, or serve in a multifunctional capacity. The objective of this study is to report advancements and identify the main countries involved in scientific research on biofertilizers globally, conducted from January 2003 to June 2023, using the Scopus database and the following keywords: "Biofertilizers," "Agricult," "Microorganism," "Inoculant," "Growth promoting bacteria," "Azospirillum," and "Pseudomonas." Through bibliometric analysis and the assistance of the VOSviewer program, 258 scientific article publications were identified, revealing contributions and co-authorship among the most influential countries, a growth trend in publications, and the most frequently occurring keywords. Over the 20 years, the number of publications has concentrated in the fields of agricultural and biological sciences, with a growth trend expected in the coming years. India stands out as the leading country in scientific knowledge production in this field, utilizing the keywords outlined in this review. The term "biofertilizer" ranks highest in the number of times cited in articles, but its definition varies across countries based on respective legislation. Standardizing the term globally could increase the number of accessible works, potentially reclassifying the top ten identified countries.
